You have run half marathon (21 km) in 1h09. When was this race? Are you a "habitué" road-races runner? Have you ever run marathon? What is you favourite distance?
Before my 28th birthday, I only ran cross, road-races and athletic tracks. In the year 1976, I tried both competitions: athletic and orienteering. I still like to run cross today; I am well placed in the 3 first in Belgium, maybe the first. I find this very important for the physical condition. My longest race was half marathon. My best time was in year 1975. My favourite distance was 10 000 with 31' as the best time. But today the time is +/- 38' because I prefer orienteering and my training isn't on the top.
You have been teacher at Ecole Royale Militaire. What did you teach there?
I taught at Military Academy of Brussels for 18 years long. During that time, I did a very good training for me and also with the students. My main activity was of course athletics, but also other sports.
What is your date of birth, where do you live, and how did you discover orienteering?
I was born on January 29th 1947 and I live at the centre of Belgium: Orbais. I discovered orienteering during my training of sport teacher in 1975.
You have integrated with military and civilian national team. For how long have you done that? Do you remember your best races in these teams?
During 10 years (1978-1987) with the national team. My best races were, for me, the CISM in Brasilia in 1983.
In Belgian championships you got a lot of medals. Do you remember your most important titles?
My most important titles are certainly the first places at the championships of Belgium every year, the victories at the championships of France, but also my 15th place at the WMOC.
I read that, in the last year, you ran in Belgium 17 races and won 12...
I certainly ran more of this and also won more.
Can you remember your participations in WMOC and other big events?
1998: WMOC Czech Republic [unknown result];
1999: WMOC Denmark [unknown result];
2000: 5 Days of France: M50 - 1st (the 2nd was Matti Railimo, from Finland);
2001: WMOC Lithuania: M50 - 33rd;
2002: 5 Days of Italy;
2003: WMOC Norway: M55 - 15th;
2004: WMOC Italy: M55-18th;
2005: Canada: NO;
2006: WMOC Austria: M55 - 32nd;
2007: WMOC Finland: M60 - 57th
Your sons Nicolas and Vincent are orienteers too. How old are they?
33 years old.
When have they been introduced to orienteering?
10 years old.
How good are their performances?
Nicolas is one of the best with Fabien Pasquasy .
How many people do you usually have in a normal national race in Belgium?
Usually 400 people.
How many races in a year?
3 Days of Belgium is a "must" in your country. This year it will be held on May 10th-12th. Can you give us a good reason to go there?
Good maps to have fun to run
You were teaching, I suppose, Physical Education. Let me ask you, what does a boy need to become an Elite orienteering runner?
Training and still training! But also need a family who support him very well.
What kind of training do you use to do? What weekly training program could you suggest for a middle-level orienteer aged 50-65 years old?
Combination of running and bike 4-5 days in the week. But not too much out of limit. Cross-country is good for the physical training.
What do you expect from WMOC 2008?
With orienteering, it's very difficult to be certain. But running in the top 10 is a good dream.
