Who is Who
Eero Tuuteri

Eero Tuuteri, M85, FIN

You got 3 bronze medals in this century: Lithuania 2001, Austria 2006 and Finland 2007. How did you discover orienteering and for how long have you practiced it?
Ever since I was a little boy I have spent a lot of time in nature running, skiing, rowing and biking. So it was natural that, in the middle of the 1930s, I learned with my best friend to read a map and use a compass.

Do you remember your first races?
My first orienteering competition was in war circumstances in 1942, a couple of kilometres from the first line. The map was not very exact and I had only rubber boots and a soldier's uniform. Still I won the championship of the unit. Then followed a long gap in competitions, though because of my profession as a forester I often used maps and a compass. In the 1960s I took part in scouting. Once I decided to participate in a scout championship competition, to test my orienteering skills. Obviously I didn't have them. I made all the mistakes of a beginner. It took over 3 hours to run a 6 km route but finally I reached the goal. Then I decided to relearn the noble art of orienteering and I suppose I have had some success.

Which event was the best for you and what memories do you have from it?
I have many memories of competitions. I remember especially the orienteering week in Switzerland 1975 because it was my first competition abroad. Running in an unfamiliar terrain went quite well even though I was well behind the lead. Later I also competed in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria and Lithuania.

What do you expect from WMOC 2008?
I am looking forward to the WMOC 2008 competition in Portugal. I am interested especially in the sprint competition that is in program for the first time. I'm also looking forward to new experiences in a new environment, meeting good fellow competitors and of course successful route choices. Between the competitions it will be very interesting to learn about the history and the culture and see the sights of the host country! I wish all my fellow competitors successful games and especially a nice orienteering week!
