Who is Who
Cornelia Eckardt, W35, GER
What is your date of birth and where do you live?
I was born on July 19, 1969, and I live in Dresden.
Your highlights before coming to Masters?
My best results were a 9th place on World University Championships 1994 and a 25th place on World Cup in Great Britain 1998.
How did you discover orienteering?
Back in 1981, I was looking for a new sport. One of my teachers was also the coach of the orienteering group and so I began with orienteering.
What do you enjoy the most in this sport?
I like orienteering because new challenges are to be resolved at every training or competition and you are always looking for the perfect race.
Which best events have you participated?
One of the best events I have participated in so far was the 6-days of Switzerland 2006 because of the very special terrain and the sights of the Matterhorn mountain each day. And there is another event, the 24-hours Orienteering Relay in Germany which is a very thrilling event. I also like the big relays in Scandinavia, e.g. Tiomila, Jukola and 25manna, in which our club takes part.
Which season was the best for you?
Maybe my best season was 1994 when I succeeded in joining the national team and took part in the World Cup for the first time.
What kind of terrain do you prefer? Technical? Physical?
I prefer more technical terrain, like in Scandinavia, because I'm not a good runner and I'm better navigating.
5th in Italy 2004, 1st in Canada 2005, 5th in Austria 2006, 11th in Finland 2007. What are you aiming for your last participation in W35?
I would like to have a good race with few mistakes.
What kind of training do you use to do?
Normally, I train 3 to 5 times a week. In Dresden, you have the opportunity for a training nearly every day. Once a week, I do an orienteering training.
Do you have any special program of training to WMOC?
At the moment I have no special program. But I have got the old maps of the terrain and will take those with me on my running training.
What can you tell us about orienteering in Germany?
The situation in Germany is not easy. There is almost no financial support/sponsorship for the national team. That is clearly one reason for fewer members in the team. The present stars are Karin Schmalfeld and Leif Bader, but there are also some good young athletes, so let's hope for the future. In Germany, we have about 10 weekends with national races per year and one or more regional events nearly every weekend. The most important events in 2008 will be the championships and the International Baltic Sea-Orienteering Event. Every two years, the Thuringian 24-hours Orienteering Relay takes place.
What is your job?
I'm an engineer of survey, but I have an office job. Therefore, sport is a very good compensation.
What is the secret to be a winner?
I think it is important to have strong nerves and good concentration during the competition.
Do you have any special care with what you eat?
I have no special care, I like pasta and I'm not a huge fan of meat.
What are now your hobbies besides orienteering?
I like to read, play piano and do other sports like biking and skiing.
What is your favourite website?
www.tu-ol-dresden.de, the website of our club.
Can you give a message to the other competitors?
Stay healthy and enjoy orienteering.
