Who is Who
Elizabeth Brown

Elizabeth Brown, W90, GBR

Since Norway 2003, where estonian Leida Sevruk ran in W90 (strangely her name doesn't appear in IOF results list), WMOC never had a lady in this class. A supplementary reason to greet the british Elizabeth Brown.

What is your date of birth?
29/11/1918

Please, indicate the highlights of your sporting career.
Over the years in various classes: World Veteran Champion, British Champion, JK Champion, Scottish 6-Day Competition Winner

How did you discover orienteering?
I was introduced to it by one of my daughters in 1970.

Do you remember your first races?
My first event was a Wayfarers course in Derbyshire where we used 3-colour maps on which we had to add map corrections, copy down the course from master maps and punch control cards. It was very informal.

Which have been the events from which you have the best memories?
I have enjoyed masses and masses events but particular highlights have been: Scottish 6-Day events - every one of them from 1977 - 2007. Good competition areas and a fun atmosphere. Swedish 5 Day O-Ringen - a cheerful mass of people and well organised. Several Mountain Marathons - the skills of not only route finding but also camping overnight, both on the official campsite and also alone when we got benighted.

Can you remember any funny episodes from a big event?
One particular memory is when I first started orienteering. I was taking part in a 2-day event with a chasing start on the second day. I caught the leader up on the second day at the final control. As I overtook her on the run-in, out of consideration, I stopped and let her go by. I hadn't realised the significance of being in the lead! My family, who knew more than I did at the time, were watching and couldn't believe what was happening.

What do you enjoy most in orienteering?
Finding the controls and finishing. Finding the controls and finishing.

Have you made any special friendships in this sport?
Over the years I've met lots of different people of many different nationalities - all of whom have been friendly.

What do you feel about the way that you are seen by younger orienteers?
A quote from the grandchildren: "We think granny is impressive and it's great she goes orienteering."

Do you have orienteers in your family?
2 daughters, 2 sons-in-law, 2 grandchildren.

What does your family think about your activity?
A quote from the daughters: "We are all very proud of you - for all your achievements over the years, for the skills you have shown, for still competing at such an age, for the determination you showed in competing again after a very bad accident you had whilst orienteering and for inspiring us. We're keen supporters of all you do."

What is the secret for your sporting long life?
Having an active lifestyle. (My mother also shows great determination in keeping going against the odds.)

What kind of training did you do when you were younger? And now, what do you do to maintain your performance?
Trained for the London Marathon 1982. Jogged daily when younger. Now go for at least a 2 mile (3 Km) walk every day.

Do you have any special care with what you eat?
Not especially.

How did you coordinate your professional and sporting life?
I retired before I started orienteering!

And now, what are your hobbies besides orienteering?
Embroidery, reading, going to the theatre, voluntary work.

What do you expect from WMOC 2008?
To enjoy it.

Can you give any message to the other competitors?
Enjoy it and have fun.
