2nd Qualification Long Distance Race also in Pataias

Once again, Pataias received the WMOC 2008 Long Distance Qualification heats. The map/terrain was similar to yesterday's, but with smooth climbs, which allowed a very good running velocity. The best runners of yesterday were [mainly] also the best runners of today.

Tomorrow in the same area it will happen the Open Race 2.

1st Qualification Long Distance Race in Pataias

The Forest of Pataias (Alcobaça) was the venue chosen for the 1st Qualification Long Distance Race of the WMOC'08 Portugal. With distances between 10.6 km and 1.3km for M35 and W90 respectively, it was basically held in pine tree forest in clean sand dunes with some areas of pronounced slope.
Some orienteers sprint winners again managed to repeat the successful in this Long Distance Qualification, as the Finnish Petri Noponen winner of the 1st serie M35 with 59:40, Philippe Page from France winner of the 3rd serie in M45 - 49:46, Sigurd Dæhli - Norway, winner of the 2nd serie in M55 - 37:13, Matti Railimo from Finland, winner 3rd serie M60 - 37:43, Rune Rådeström - Sweden, winner of the 5th serie M65 - 39:46, Roland Karlsson - Sweden, 2nd in 3rd serie in M70 - 36:51, Peo Bengtsson - Sweden, winner in the 1st serie M75 - 35:35, Katja Honkala - Finland, winner of the 1st serie W35 - 43:10, Carina Svensson - Sweden, winner of the 1st serie W40 - 32:55, Birgitta Olsson - Sweden, winne rof the 2nd serie W65 - 31:07, Gunvor Göranson - Sweden, winner of the 1st serie W75 - 28:18 and Sole Nieminen - Finland, winner of the 1st serie W80 - 24:30.

By bike to Portugal

Eddie Maclarnon (NGOC), came to Portugal from Cheltenham in Great Britain by bike. He cycled for 21 days more than 1200 kilometres. He was the first winner of WMOC'08 Portugal.

Sprint Final

Praia da Vieira enchanted itself in receiving the 13º World Masters Orienteering Championships. It was a historical for our country to receive the first Sprint Championship ever.
After the Qualification race in urban terrain with the Leiria's Castle as a stage, the final was in a area where the three areas joined (urban in the old part of the village, sand dunes and forest). On the end of this day everybody was happy about the courses and the technical demand. With a great logistic, the WMOC'08 organisation managed to offer an event of excellency.
The nothern europe countries were the favourites with Sweden receiving 25 medals and Finland 10.
One of the highest moments of the Prize Giving Ceremony was the receiving award by Erkki Luntamo (M90) and Elizabeth Brown (W90), who by their ages are a trully example of a long and happy life in sport.
In the end, there was a typical sardinhada to the athletes that registered and where everybody gather.

Sprint Qualifying Race in Leiria

The city of Leiria opened in the best way the 13th WMOC - World Masters Orienteering Championships, by receiving the 3500 orienteers from the 5 continents, with urban courses technically and physically very hard.
The historical part of Leiria was the map where all the orienteers were challenged to proof what they are able to make with this unusual opening with a Sprint Championship.

The bigger courses started inside Leirias's Castle dated from the century XII. This type of course created a lot of surprises, with countries without much tradition in orienteering, managed to achieve great results.
Tomorrow it will be Praia da Vieira the hountest , with mixed courses in forest and urban in the old part of the village. It is expected to have a great orienteering day, with good courses, a lot of competition and great emotion all together.

Presentation of WMOC'08 Portugal anthem

It's already possible to see online the opening movie that will be shown during the Opening Ceremony of WMOC'08. The movie is accompanied by the official anthem of the event, which has music and lyrics of "The Gift", ambassadors of the WMOC.

The ceremony, held in Marinha Grande, begins around 16pm with the parade of the athletes from Cerca Park to the Martires do Colonialismo Park. The Opening will have the presence of several national figures.

What´s new at the Event Centre

All athletes who pass by the Event Centre can watch a craftsman working glass. This craftsman joined the spirit of the event and is making small figures in glass linked to modality, which are attractive to athletes for their originality.

Warm Up

Elapsed today in the forest of Pedreanes the first of 3 open races: the "Warm Up". This competition served to the athletes makes it to adapt to the Portuguese terrain and mapping and was attended by 600 athletes. In general the athletes liked the pathways, griping is only the heat that was felt during the afternoon.
